Girls of Salem 1957 cancel lunch
SALEM -- Girls of the Salem High School Class of 1957 have canceled their lunch meeting today.
Breakfast buffet offered at Masons
SALEM--A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.
The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.
Fallfest set in Damascus
DAMASCUS -- The public is invited to the Community Fallfest from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Damascus Community Center Park, 164 Damascus-Georgetown Road. The event features food, fun and entertainment for the family.
Tours offered in Alliance
ALLIANCE -- Alliance Historical Society will offer tours of the Victorian gardens and the Mabel Hartzell Historical Home at 840 N. Park Ave. from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The free garden tour is offered as part of the "Get Outdoors Alliance" week of events sponsored by the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce.
The impressive Italianate home was built in 1867 by Matthew Earley, a local tanner and businessman who lived there with his wife Mary and their adopted daughter Mabel Hartzell, a longtime educator and community leader. The home is owned and operated by the Alliance Historical Society.
Barrie Kridler and Barry Nichols of Kridler Gardens in Homeworth will be on site. Kridler Gardens helped design the layout of the gardens and currently maintains them. Potted plants will be available to purchase and the society will have Ancient Baltic Ivy and the rare Pink Lily of the Valley, both original plants from the Hartzell home. Inside tours of the home and the Alliance History Mini-Museum will be available that day from 1 to 4 p.m. for a $5 fee and free for children under 12.
Sausage sandwiches at Banquet
SALEM -- The Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. The meal will be sponsored by Friends of the Banquet and offers sweet sausage sandwiches with green peppers and onions, cheesy potatoes, baked beans, applesauce; fresh fruits and vegetables, ice cream sundaes. Eastern Gateway fest set
STEUBENVILLE -- Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) will hold its annual College Fest from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 26 with the college fair portion of the day from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. on the Steubenville campus
EGCC's annual College Fest exposes hundreds of local high school students to various opportunities after graduation. Students will be able to learn about many different career paths available after high school, talk to representatives from over 60 regional two- and four-year colleges and universities, as well as gain exposure to the many programs offered by EGCC.
Music Club opens season
SALEM -- The Salem Music Study Club, will host its opening meeting in observance of its 93rd season, at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Smucker House. The first meeting is where the dues increase for members ($25-$30). A business session follows by a program, "A Fun Singalong of the Decades" by Ruth Newman and Anna Anderson. Refreshments will be served.
Remove cemetery decorations
SALEM -- All summer decorations on graves at Grandview and Hope cemeteries must be removed by Oct. 1.
Fish dinner drive-thru set
SALEM - A fried fish dinner drive-thru will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Salem Saxon Club. The dinner will include fried fish, scalloped potatoes, corn and cake. Baked fish will be offered by pre-order only through Oct. 2. Fried fish dinners can be pre-ordered by calling 330-692-2009 anytime from now until the day of the dinner. On the day of the dinner, meals can be ordered from noon to 4 p.m. by calling 330-222-1770.
LISBON -- The Christina House Domestic Violence Program, along with Ozer Ministries, will host the Purple Door Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at St. George Social Hall, 278 W. High St. This event is the kick-off for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year's theme is "Kids Behind the Purple Door." It is estimated that one in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year. Additionally, 90 percent of these children are eyewitnesses to the violence.
The breakfast begins with registration at 8 a.m. or by calling the Christina Center at 330-420-0845 or by email at nostick@ccregional.org. Reservations are due by Oct. 2. The event is sponsored by The Christina House, a program of Catholic Charities Regional Agency, Ozer Ministries of East Palestine and the Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services.
Financial aid night at United
HANOVERTON -- United High School will host a financial aid night for interested parents, guardians and students from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the high school library. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), scholarship, grant and loan information will be covered.
St. Paul plans bus trip
SALEM -- St. Paul Catholic Church is offering an early Christmas trip on Nov. 10. Included with bus transportation is a tour of Castle Noel in Medina which houses the world's largest collection of Christmas Movie Memorabilia and America's largest indoor Christmas entertainment attractions.
In Dalton, participants will enjoy an Amish lunch buffet and the Amish Kitchen Experience where they decorate Christmas cookies to take home. Guests may play "Elf on the Shelf" while Christmas shopping for unique gifts at P. Graham Dunn which has over 30,000 products and at Lehman's 35,000-square-foot retail store.
